Hackathon FAQ
What is a hackathon?
A hackathon is an event where participants from a variety of different backgrounds get together for a short time to collaborate on a project.
Who can participate?
While the rules may vary depending on the event, hackathons are often open to anyone regardless of background or experience. Hackers may come from fields ranging from engineering to public health, and many have little or no experience with computer programming.
What kinds of projects do hackers work on?
The types of projects generally depend on the type of hackathon. For example, events may focus on addressing a specific subject such as healthcare inequality, or using a given application programming interface to create a useful tool. Events often start with a presentation on the subject of interest, with participants coming up with ideas and forming teams afterwards.
How long does a hackathon last?
Events may last anywhere from a few hours to a few days.
